The Lake Area Sisterhood was founded in 2007 by four women from Lake and Porter counties in northwest Indiana. They came together with the goal of creating a space for women where consciousness-raising and sacred feminine culture could both be explored. Initially the group did monthly workshops at the Merrillville library as well as a book group focusing on radical feminist authors. This expanded in 2009 when the annual retreat known as Goddess Rising was born. The first retreat was held in 2010 at the Indiana Dunes State Park. Thirteen women attended this inaugural event. Since 2010 the event has been moved to a retreat center in St. Joseph county out of privacy and creative freedom concerns.
The Lake Area Sisterhood is an active group which brings together women of all backgrounds who wish to have a space in which they can express themselves freely and explore facets of modern womanhood not addressed in everyday society. We still have our reading group as well as monthly meetups on the new moon. We also host a tarot tea every month at rotating locations throughout Lake County. Our aim is to grow Sisterhood in all its potent ramifications and give women a home where their voices are heard. Please join us!
